Gardenstown, Banffshire, North East Scotland.
Granny Curly's cottage is situated in a peaceful village within a conservation area of Gardenstown nestled within Gamrie Bay which also takes in the smaller village of Crovie. Gardenstown is an old fishing village with a small harbour which is still used for small inshore fishing boats which largely fish for lobsters and mackeral depending on the time of the year. The village is surrounded by jaggy cliffs and rolling farmland with beautiful views across the Moray Firth. Beaches, country walks and the harbour are all close by Granny Curly's Cottage. The hotel and local shops, including a butcher and baker are all in easy walking distance. There is a small restaurant overlooking the harbour and another tea room a short distance beyond.
Gamrie Bay and adjacent coastline are stunningly beautiful. The majestic cliffs, secluded bays and rocky outcrops are home to rare seabird colonies. There is an abundance of wild coastal flowers, birds of prey and many other interesting flora and fauna including orchids, badgers, foxes and roe deer, whilst the sea is home to dolphins and seals.
East of Gamrie Bay lies Pennan made famous as the main location for the movie "Local Hero". Pennan continues to attract visitors from around the world to the popular hotel and the even more famous phone box!
Children will love the freedom that village life brings and will spend hours looking for crabs and shellfish under rocks and paddling in the pools. The area has yet to be fully discovered by tourism and unlike many small villages Gardenstown still has plenty of permanent residents. It is generally considered that the area is favoured with above average sunshine and below average rainfall for the United Kingdom and on many occasions locals will be out in deckchairs enjoying the sun when others elsewhere are not so fortunate.
Gardenstown really is a well kept secret which you will delight in uncovering!
